Spending in many sectors may be sluggish, but you'd be hard-pressed to find a jeweler in a panic.
Many have St. Valentine to thank.
"Men will come in and spend anywhere from $500 to $50,000 on jewelry in February," says Marc Green, owner of Lux Bond & Green in West Hartford, Conn. "Very often we'll see guys go easy over the Christmas holidays, wait to see their bonus check come in, and then go all out for Valentines Day."

This year, jewelers are expecting pieces in rose and yellow gold as well as long chains, oversized watches, cuffs and colored stones to be big sellers. And they're available at prices both princes and paupers can afford.

"White gold and platinum are still most popular when it comes to diamond settings," says Damon Gross, chief operating officer of Hyde Park Jewelers in Denver, "but for bolder statements like bangles or a chunky necklace, rose gold is definitely on trend."
On the high end, the $4,750 Vanity Fair ring by Simon G combines white, rose and yellow gold with white and canary diamonds; David Yurman sells a $270 yellow gold and silver heart charm bracelet for those looking for a more subtle statement.

But with the dollar weak and gold selling high, pieces like these are likely to cost you. In his spring 2008 collection, designer John Hardy features 18-karat yellow-gold cuffs set in "negative space," a technique that uses less gold and more open, airy frame work, ideal for layering. They cost between $1,050 to $4,250.

While many men choose to play it safe with rings and bracelets, chances are your sweetie will sigh over a fine watch.
"Women are much more interested in watches than they used to be," says Randy Udell, vice president of London Jewelers in Manhasset, N.Y. "The cool, new trend is to wear chunky, oversized watches ... as an accessory."
Terrific Timepieces
Those with bulging wallets will wow her with Cartier's Ballon Bleu watch. Its varnished, silvered, Opaline dial is made with 18-carat rhodium-plated white gold and encircled with diamonds; it also features a sapphire cabochon winding mechanism. Michele offers a less expensive option; also outlined with diamonds, the Deco Diamond comes with a stainless steel strap that can be alternated with others, like alligator, that are sold separately.
Some men find colored stones are a good option for a woman who already has a large jewelry collection. Harry Winston's 5.96-carat pink, cushion-cut diamond ring is the ultimate gift; it features 18-carat rose-gold and platinum and trapezoid diamond brackets; its price is available upon request. For those who aren't willing to sell the yacht to buy a single piece of jewelry, colorful cocktail rings from Lagos and Judith Ripka can also get the job done.
Though jewelers are doing their best to offer pieces at various price points, what they find is that men often spend more than they had planned.
"Valentine's Day gifts are an emotional buy," says Gross. "Guys might come in expecting to spend a certain amount, but when they see the jewelry and visualize the 'wow' factor, that dollar amount goes out the window."
